M6i gives a lot of music information and does not hide anything important - you quickly get used to its powerful, confident soun despite its strict manners. Switching to a normal line input is accompanied by a slight decrease in gain (with the volume knob unchanged), but if you compensate it, you will get a very similar open sound with the same strong dynamic temperament. The M6si performs immaculately. Distortion is very low, at less than 0. No fuss at all with any type of music that I play through it. Even playing my old cassettes, the amp shines through.

Plenty of weight and a smooth tonal character, but could be better balanced. A forward-looking product with a refined sound – but it could do with a little more sonic sparkle. Premium in-ears lack finesse.

Fit and finish are excellent and all knobs and buttons (which are a little small if you have fat fingers) felt firm to the touch. The review sample had a nice, uh, “matt silver” faceplate but the M6si also comes in matte black, if you prefer. I grew to like the large centred silver volume knob, sitting dead centre of the amp. Its casework feels solid and is nicely finished.

The panel controls feel precise, though the transport buttons are below the drawer so operation is awkward when it’s open. Compared to some of the other models available for this price, it can seem absurdly minimalist, lacking many of the features we are coming to expect on stereo integrated designs.
