Half wave rectifier

Rectification is an application of the pn junction diode. So to understand the underlying theory behind a half wave rectifier , you need to understand the pn junction and the characteristics of the pn junction diode. Half - wave rectifiers are used to convert AC voltage to DC voltage, and only require a single diode to construct.

For example, if the positive half cycle is allowed then the negative half cycle is blocked. Due to low rectification efficiency, half wave rectifiers are considered to be less efficient. A half wave rectifier offers high ripple factor thus is proved as a disadvantageous factor.

The transformer utilization factor is also low in case of half wave rectifier. The rectifier can be either a half - wave rectifier or a full- wave rectifier. The filter eliminates the fluctuations in the rectified voltage and produces a relatively smooth dc voltage. This article describes the half wave rectifier circuit working. The half rectifier consist a step down transformer, a diode connected to the transformer and a load resistance connected to the cathode end of the diode.

Since the output of the half-wave rectifier is still a pulsating DC voltage, the electrolytic capacitor here is used to filter the output of the rectifier and produce a smooth DC voltage. The voltage rating depends on the output voltage from the rectifier. As a result only part (typically half ) of the waveform passes and the waveform is rectified.

The half wave rectifier circuit operates by using a diode to prevent one half of an alternating current waveform to pass.

A half - wave rectifier is a simple circuit that is basically used for converting an AC voltage to the DC voltage. The negative half cycles of the a. So no current is conducted and hence no voltage appears across the load. So current always flows in one direction (i.e. d.c. ) through the load. This process is known as half wave rectification.

Full Wave Rectifier Full wave rectifier is a circuit which is used for rectification. Consider the half-wave rectifier circuit with resistive load. Firstly take any four diodes and measure the threshold voltage value (V_T) using DMM. Once the threshold voltage is confirmed.

Then the selected diode is connected in series with the supply voltage and the resistive load. Subtracting the rectifier itself loss half wave rectifier circuit gets the efficiency of 40. But the circuit is too simple and cost-effective that a lot of applications make use of this circuit, especially in toys, communication as a peak detector, radios, beard trimmers, and iron solders. Vs is supply and ‘is‘ is the source current. VT and ‘iT‘ is the SCR voltage and current respectively.

Vo and ‘io‘ is the load voltage and current respectively. Vs = Vmsin(ωt) Step-1:. A Half - Wave rectifier is an electronic circuit which converts only one- half of the AC cycle into pulsating DC.

Single Phase Half Wave Controlled Rectifier with R. It utilizes only half of AC cycle for the conversion process.

On the other han Full wave rectifier is an electronic circuit which converts entire cycle of AC into Pulsating DC. In half-wave rectifier ,a half cycle of ac waveform is transformed into direct current and in full- wave rectifier , both cycle or complete waveform of AC current is transformed into the direct current. In today’s post, we will have a detailed look at half-wave rectifier its circuit, applications, and some other related parameters. In a half - wave rectifier circuit, the load resistance is connected in series with the PN junction diode. Half wave rectifier uses the same principle as PN junction diode and thus converts AC to DC.

But the obtained Direct Current (DC) at the output is not a pure Direct Current (DC). Alternating current is the input of the half - wave rectifier. Half Wave Rectifier Objective.

It is a pulsating Direct Current (DC). To design and study a Half Wave Rectifier. A rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current (AC), which periodically reverses direction, to direct current (DC), which flows in only one direction. This simulation plots the input voltage as a sine wave and the output voltage as a series of “humps” corresponding to the positive half -cycles of the AC source voltage. If the positive half cycle is considered then the negative half cycle of the source gets blocked or if the negative cycle of the source is considered in that case positive cycle gets blocked.

In Half Wave Rectifier , when the AC supply is applied at the input, a positive half cycle appears across the loa whereas the negative half cycle is suppressed. This can be done by using the semiconductor PN junction diode.
