Electrolytic capacitor polarity

When the electrolytic capacitors are polarize the voltage or potential on the positive terminal is greater that of the negative one, allowing charge to flow freely throughout the capacitor. An electrolytic capacitor is a polarized capacitor whose anode or positive plate is made of a metal that forms an insulating oxide layer through anodization. This oxide layer acts as the dielectric of the capacitor. A soli liqui or gel electrolyte covers the surface of this oxide layer, serving as the cathode or negative plate of the capacitor.


If more capacitance is needed than a single component can provide, the capacitors can be used in parallel, of course. Electrolytic capacitor values begin around μF and go into the thousands of μF.

This follows the principle of the “ Forward Bias ” of the Diode. The two terminals in it can be considered as ‘Anode’ and the ‘Cathode’. The voltage value at the terminal anode must be higher than that of the terminal cathode. A capacitor that consists of the terminals which possess certain voltage values that is either positive or negative. This type of terminal’s classification leads to the determination of the capacitor with polarity or without polarity.


According to the polarity of safety capacitors , it is divided into: polarized capacitors and non-polarized capacitors. Therefore, safety capacitors have positive and negative poles. There is a thick white wire on the outside of a normal electrolytic capacitor.


Meaning they have a positive and negative pin.

Incorrect polarity or excessive voltages can destroy the dielectric of the electrolytic capacitor. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors can then explode and tantalum capacitors can catch fire. For this reason, always observe the correct polarity of capacitors.


These are called electrolytic capacitors , and their polarity is clearly marked. Reversing voltage polarity to an electrolytic capacitor may result in the destruction of that super-thin dielectric layer, thus ruining the device. However, the thinness of that dielectric permits extremely high values of capacitance in relatively small package size.


All capacitors with rated voltages are forbidden to be charged. Each time the capacitor bank recloses, the capacitor must be discharged for 3min after the switch is disconnected. Otherwise, the voltage polarity of the closing moment may be caused by the opposite polarity of the residual charge on the capacitor.
