Thermistors differ from resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) in that the material used in a thermistor is generally a ceramic or polymer, while RTDs use pure metals. Thermistoren worden voornamelijk gebruikt als temperatuursensoren, beperken van aanloopstromen, zelfherstellende overbelastingsbeveiliging, en in zelfregulerende verwarmingselementen. PTC-weerstand (Positive Temperature Coefficient) Een PTC-weerstand is een thermistor met een positieve temperatuurcoëfficiënt.
